Phone interview

Standard

Her mom set her up

with one of her old friend’s son

“He’ll give you a call and you two can just talk”.

This was matchmaking done in the typical

way of her culture.

An update from looking through a box of black and white pictures.

(that was for the guy to do though,

like looking through a catalog for a “wife”).

She agreed to a phone chat

(but she really didn’t want to)

it’s not like she was desperate for marriage

much less pushing a baby carriage.

But oh well. It’s just a phone call.

The phone chat was brief.

They introduced themselves

name and job description

Then into the works of the stilted conversation

the young lady asks:

“What’s your dream?’

“What do you really want to do?”

“What did you want to be when you were a little boy?

On the other side, there was a brief silence

He could only answer about his current profession;

it was a good paying job in the technology field

working in a corporation

known throughout the nation

correction: known globally.

Then silence from him on the other end of the line.

Well, sir, thank you for your time, she thought,

and parted courteously from the phone.

She looked at her mom and firmly shook her head NO.

NO more matchmaking attempts.

NO more phone conversations.
