Mistaken for a Leaf

Standard

The summer solstice was just a few days away.

It was a sunny weekend afternoon in June that I was standing in the front garden with the house not more than a couple of feet behind me.

What I thought was a stray leaf had floated down in front of me from above.

It was dark, a blur of what I mistook for rust hues of a dry leaf, perhaps from a sick tree.

But it opened its wings and landed neatly on a Lacinato kale leaf in front of me and proceeded to sun itself in the afternoon light.

And this lovely surprise was the “leaf“.
